The Highliners of the West Coast Charter Fishing Industry You may hear about all the years of experience a guide may have, but this phrase doesn’t hold a lot of water. If you were to guide at a northern lodge in the Queen Charlotte Islands for example, your season would consist of 6-8 weeks annually. 42-56 days of guided fishing, that’s all. All of our guides are owner operators who have cut their teeth commercial fishing or at local resorts and made the transition to Professional Sport Fishing Guides.  Each one has their own unique stories and unique fishing background, but they all have one thing in common, over a thousand days as a professional guide, fishing our region along the West Coast of Vancouver Island, BC. There is now substitution for experience, and we have it.

 

Dave Porter  a.k.a. Skipper Dave   

Skipper Dave grew up in Port Alberni (former Salmon Capital of the World) and at 13 he “broke in” working in the commercial fleet where one of the most succsessful commercial salmon fishing tandems of the era, Darren and Graham Snyder took him under their wing. The skills and techniques passed on from generation to generation cannot be taught in a classroom but only learned by spending years at sea.  Salt runs in his veins and transition to charter guide was a natural progression as the commercial industry was slowly downsized. He has often been referred to as one of Ucluelet's top guides. For Dave its simple, “be at the right place at the right time. When the fish are biting, get there first with the best gear in the water.”

As Jeremy would put it, " I'm crazy about fishing” Jeremy Riley Has been guiding out Ucluelet for the Past 12 seasons where he has mentored under some of the most successful guides the area has to offer. At any time when the conversation leads to big water and lots of fish Jeremy is at the tip of their tongues “the basic guiding skills these guys have taught me are priceless ..., how to read the weather, the water ... and most of all where the big fish might be, and always are!
