Salmon Fishing the West Coast of Vancouver Island We are a lucky bunch here in Ucluelet. The productive fishing waters off Vancouver Islands west coast are right at our doorstep. Our Coastal waters are nutrient rich and are an ideal breeding ground and feeding ground for many species, including all BC Salmon and the Pacific Halibut. Here is what our coastal waters have to offer and why.

Salmon Fishing the West Coast of Vancouver Island is like fishing nowhere else on the BC coast, including, but not limited to the waters of Hakai Pass, Langara Island, Rivers Inlet, and Haida Guay. (the Queen Charlotte Islands) Our Fishing is better, it’s that simple.  These other locations all share one common trait. They are a run specific fishery, meaning they rely heavily on the returning stocks of one specific river system.  While the fishing at these locations can be exceptional, if that one single river system has a poor return, your fishing adventure will likely wind up with a poor return.

The West Coast of Vancouver Island and the region off of Ucluelet, where all of our fishing charters take place, run all the fish for the entire Pacific Northwest. The Fraser River, Colombia River, Thompson River, and Adams River just to name a few of the larger systems, not to mention some smaller river systems such as the Stamp, Somas, Vetter, Cowichan, Nit-Nat, Nahmint......

The most important detail is that we are located in such an area that all these salmon from all these different river systems are funnelled thru and feed in our offshore waters for the duration of our fishing season. If one run of Salmon is having a poor return for a specific year, it doesn’t impact our fishing because one of the other salmon runs will be having an exceptional year. 

Double and triple headers are also a common occurrence while salmon fishing especially later into July and August when the Coho are thick. You can expect to box about 12-24 fish while releasing that many more on your average day fishing in Ucluelet.

One of the best tips that is most commonly overlooked while salmon fishing is having razor sharp hooks. It is the easiest thing to do and makes the most difference in whether you come home with a few fish or a cooler full. Every time you hook a fish, salmon or halibut, that hook should be checked and sharpened. It is a fishing basic, but it cannot be overlooked.
