Halibut Fishing BC

There are a few different options when it comes to fishing for Halibut in the Tofino and Ucluelet area along the BC coast.

Jigging for Halibut is the most common way to fish for this Pacific Giant. Spreader bars are used with 1-2lb leads drift fishing the bottom at various locations at the South bank, Big bank, Southwest corner, Hyson bank, and Long Beach bank. It is also standard practice to troll your halibut up with 6 and 7 inch Tomic Plugs and Spoons. These two methods of Halibut fishing are the most widely practiced fishing methods along the BC coast. Productivity cannot be argued by using these methods of fishing, you get your fish!  The average size of Halibut caught ranges from 15-30lbs. You do land the odd Halibut from 50-75lbs. Trophy Halibut Fishing is where it’s at if you are looking for a few big Halibut rather than a boat full of chickens.

Trophy Halibut Fishing is just starting to take off in the southern region of the BC coast and we are the frontrunners, consistently producing the most trophy Halibut on our Docks. (75lbs thru 150lbs plus) If you are in for a thrill of a lifetime, S.H.S. can “Hook You Up” Our boats are rigged to Anchor for those elusive trophy class Halibut that hold in the rock piles of BC’s west coast. It takes patience, the right current, proper sea conditions, and experience, but trophy Halibut Fishing is something that is worth adding an extra day of fishing to your trip for. Contact us for more details, it’s a rush like no other.

“Calm waters, light mist in the air, the fog is just lifting, you have been sitting on the pick(anchor) for about three hours, no much action. New rigs have just been sent down, whole salmon heads, giant pilchard, octopus and squid. The Port rod’s reel just starts screaming, 50, no 100, no 150 yards of line just went flying out. It stops, you tighten down on the drag and slam the rod up and backwards as high and as hard as you can. Fish on! You have just been Hooked Up........” That’s just a taste of what Trophy Halibut Fishing is all about.

A couple of options present themselves while halibut fishing in Ucluelet. If you prefer going to the big bank and catching chickens (15-25lb) halibut one after the other that’s where we go. If you are looking for that big dog, patience is the key. Skipper Dave will gladly spend a day or two sitting on the pick and trying to draw in that halibut of a lifetime for you, and in the meantime probably catch a few in the 50-70lb range in the process. Check out the photo’s they speak for themselves.
